I disagree that the black distinction should be left out because there is a greater disproportion of black people that are at higher risk of developing addictions and not being able to access treatment. Omitting this racial component perpetuates the assumption that everyone has an equal chance at recovery while also ignoring that the black experience of addiction is different from a white one, and that’s just not true.

Life expectancy has dropped by an entire year. That’s 328 million years of life lost. Covid has accounted for less than 5 million of those 328. Things like overdoses and suicides are a big factor.
500k covid deaths X an average of less 10 years of expected life left = less than 5 million years of life lost to covid.
